The Children’s House

The Children’s House curriculum is a scientifically prepared environment which supports the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of each child between the ages of 3 years and 6 years old.  This is a multi age classroom for children who have transitioned from the Toddler House, are independent in toilet use, can eat and drink independently with little mess, can work more autonomously, can sit for a story in a group setting, and are ready for a more academic environment. The Children's House includes three years of attendance with the culmination of the kindergarten year to prepare the child to graduate and enter elementary school life.

The Children’s House classroom areas afforded to the child are Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, and Cultural, which includes Art, Geography & Science. The classroom is organized in a sequential manner ranging in difficulty from concrete to more abstract concepts. We follow an Anti-Bias approach to education while aligning with a Montessori Peace Curriculum to honor all people with an emphasis on those marginalized by society.

The children in this classroom continue to strengthen speech and language development in both English & Spanish; strengthen both fine and gross motor skills as they explore self, family, and the world in which they live, work on mathematical concepts and strategies, participate in direct observations and manipulation of physical properties in the areas of Life Science, Physical Sciences, Earth Science, and Scientific Reasoning.

The development of order, concentration, coordination, and independence happens in the inviting area of Practical Life where children develop further independence in the care of self and the environment.  In the Sensorial curriculum area and while developing all five senses they prepare for the progression into academic work.  The Sensorial area assists in the development of observation and problem solving skills by refining skills that help young children learn how to think, reason, and make distinctions.  Children in this classroom also learn to read in both languages when ready, participate in outdoor environment learning every day, gardening, all day Spanish, baking/cooking, and circle time through a regular daily routine.

We provide an uninterrupted three hour morning work cycle followed by an afternoon work cycle for full time children. Children learn through an individualized approach by way of freedom & independence, free choice, and by being offered daily individual or small group lessons to meet their unique needs and allow them to surpass learning state benchmarks for their age.  The guide meticulously prepares the child's environment and serves as observer of their development.

We offer an immersive Spanish language experience to gain the ability to comprehend and speak in this secondary language and to value the unique culture everyday, all day, during our school day. The diversity of our teachers exposes the children to various dialects within the language and we celebrate many holidays native to Latin American countries.

The student teacher ratio in this classroom is larger than that of the Toddler House with a low student to teacher ratio of one teacher per eight students.
